Trial Date Announced In The Tobey Maguire Poker Lawsuit
Monday, 1. August 2011

Tobey Maguire, of Spiderman fame, will be heading to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles on January 30, 2012 as a result of his involvement in a regular high stakes poker game once hosted by the criminal Beverly Hills hedge fund manager, Bradely Ruderman. Maguire is one of 22 people, among the names are the billionaire Alec Gores and the host of High Stakes Poker Gabe Kaplan, being sued by Howard Ehrenberg, the court appointed trustee for the investors involved in Ruderman’s now defunct hedge fund.

Bradley Ruderman is in the midst of a 10 year prison sentence for running a Ponzi scheme in which he lost $25 million of his investors’ money through an investment advisor and wire fraud scheme. Apparently, Ruderman hosted the high stakes poker games in an effort to win his investors’ money back. Things didn’t quite work according to plan for Ruderman and he allegedly lost an additional $5.2 million playing poker.

According to the law suit, Maguire took Ruderman for $311,200 at the poker table. Maguire does not deny this and admits that he received a total of $187,000 from Ruderman in seven bank transfers made between June 2007 and May 2008. He further states that he lost $168,500 to Ruderman and believes that this loss offsets the liability.

Adam Bilzerian told Star Magazine that Ruderman typically held the games twice each week and they were usually hosted at the home of the producer Nick Cassavetes but sometimes at suites at the Viper Room, Beverly Hills Hotel and the Four Seasons. The games reportedly had buy-ins of anywhere from $40,000 up to as high as $200,000 and armed guards and professional dealers were hired.

Due to the fact that the high stakes games were not licensed, Ehrenberg is going after 22 players that won money from Ruderman over the course of the high stakes games in the name of Ruderman’s investors to the tune of $1.5 million. Maguire has also filed a counterclaim to Ehrenberg’s lawsuit in which he shouldn’t have to pay anything because the games were legal.

The high stakes poker game hosted by Ruderman was well known as “the” high stakes game in Hollywood attracting such names as Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and many others.
