Bodog To Leave US Market At End Of Year
Wednesday, 27. July 2011

Bodog announced yesterday morning that they will be taking their leave from the US market. This is true of all of their online gaming services; including, Bodog Poker, Bodog Casino, Bodog Sports and Bodog Horse. Bodog currently holds a license from Morris Mohawk Gaming but that agreement is slated to expire at the end of this year and Bodog has no intention of renewing their license with the regulatory body.

The announcement comes as no surprise when considering that just under two weeks ago, Bodog received a remote and non-remote gambling license from the UK Gambling Commission. The license was granted under a new set of regulations that are still in the works in the UK. While the regulatory changes have yet to take effect and appear that they won’t until the end of next year, Bodog was looking to get ahead of the game. The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) announced that online gaming operators would be required to obtain a license from the UK Gambling Commission in order to accept and maintain UK customers irrespective of where the operators are located. This basically shifts the focus on licensing from the location of the online gaming sites to the location of the target customer.

The decision to leave the US market is a very intelligent one on the part of Bodog. While the company will certainly lose money by leaving the US market in the fort run, online gaming is illegal in the US and offering services to US customers simply hurts the company’s credibility and could potentially hurt their position in markets elsewhere in the world, in particular, emerging markets such as Asia. A post on the website of Bodog’s founder, Calvin Ayre, stated that Bodog UK’s CEO, Patrik Selin believes that having a UK license will bring a great deal of credibility to the brand, benefitting Bodog’s customers and will allow Bodog to “attract the best talent in the industry” to Bodog.

While Bodog will be exiting the US market, their US players will have the opportunity to switch to a new Morris Mohawk Gaming brand that is set to launch at the beginning of next year with a license granted by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission.
