Review
Cake Poker was founded in early 2006 and is the flagship site of the Cake Poker Network offering high-end software, solid game selection and great promotions that you just won’t find on other networks. They lay claim to one of the highest credit card acceptance rates in the industry.

The Cake Poker Network has a number of members including PowerPoker, PlayersOnly Poker and Sportsbook Poker that help keep the tables full at Cake Poker. The most important member of the Cake Poker Network for our purposes here is of course Sportsbook. Sportsbook offers an online casino and sports book, in addition to their online poker room and bring a significant number of degenerate casino gamblers and sports betters into the fold of the Cake Poker Network and, by default, Cake Poker.

Cake Poker holds an old school philosophy towards poker; as such, they do not support PokerTracker. In addition, they allow players to change their nickname on a weekly basis preventing people from maintaining detailed player notes on you. PokerTracker and player notes are both tools for evening out the playing field between beginners and more experienced players. Cake Poker’s philosophy plays to the advantage of the more experienced player. Great software, a wealth of degenerate gamblers and an old school philosophy make Cake Poker an excellent place for an experienced player to supplement their income.

The Action
For a site with only 8,000 players at peak hours, Cake Poker has deceptively good action. The majority of the traffic on Cake Poker is concentrated around the mid to low stakes tables and you’ll find a good amount of both full ring and short-handed tables available. Texas Hold’em is, by far, the most popular game on Cake Poker, but you will generally find enough mid/low stake Omaha games running to keep you going.

The games are very soft and you’ll find the “players to flop” ratio at the $1/$2 tables can be as high as 60% and you can depend on Sportsbook to supply the type of players that just keep on depositing and never cash out.

Cake Poker hosts a good variety of poker games including:

• Texas Hold’em
• Omaha
• Omaha Hi/Lo
• 7 Card Stud
• 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo

Tournaments
There is a very good selection of tournaments to be found at Cake Poker, considering their size, and their weekly $100,000 and monthly $250,000 guaranteed tournaments are certainly worth a gander.

You will find tournaments in Texas Hold’em, Pot-Limit Omaha, Omaha and even the occasional Seven Card Stud running on Cake Poker with Deepstack and Turbo options offered for Texas Hold’em. In addition to the weekly and monthly tournaments already mentioned, Cake Poker runs a number of daily multi-table tournaments with guaranteed prize pools.

For those players looking to enter live tournaments, Cake Poker runs regular satellites for major live tournaments such as the Irish Open, Aussie Millions and, of course, the World Series of Poker.

The legendary soft competition at Cake Poker extends to their tournaments and you will find that many fish are attracted to the guaranteed prize pool tournaments through the low priced satellite tournaments.

For The Beginner
Not a whole lot going on at Cake Poker as far as instruction for the beginner; no poker academy with online classes, no interactive tutorials and no library of poker strategy articles written by pros or…spokesmodels. They do have a couple of brief articles explaining the rules of Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo and that’s about it…bare bones.

That being said, Cake Poker does offer “play money” games and freerolls so at least the beginner can fool around a bit before they move on to real money games.

Software Graphics and Features
It doesn’t take one long to notice that Cake Poker really put in the effort to produce high quality software. Graphically, it is probably the most impressive site in the online poker industry providing a realistic 3D feel with rich photo-realistic avatars.

The lobby is very well organized and fully filterable making it easy to find the game, tournament or limit that best suits your mood. In addition, you will find all of the necessary statistics regarding each table displayed in the lobby; including, hands per hour, average pot and average players seeing the flop.

The main problem with Cake Poker’s software is stability. You will occasionally find that the software client will freeze on you. Sometimes you might even run into a partial freeze where, if you are playing on a number of tables simultaneously, some tables freeze and others keep running smoothly.

• Phenomenal graphics
• Photo-realistic avatars
• Casino like feel
• Four color deck option
• Savable hand histories
• Time bank
• Player notes
• Last Hand feature
• Well organized lobby
• Fast dealer action

Bonuses
When making your first real money deposit with Cake Poker, you’ll be happy to find that Cake Poker will meet your initial deposit with a 110% First Depositor Bonus of up to $600! Your First Depositor Bonus is earned in increments of $10 based upon Frequent Player Points (FPP’s) accumulated through real money ring game or tournament play. The number of FPP’s required to receive your next increment of $10 in bonus money is posted within the Cashier Tab under the dollar amount.

You have 90 days within which to earn your First Depositors Bonus.

Promotions
Cake Poker offers a good loyalty program based on Frequent Player Points. 1 FPP is earned per dollar raked (maximum of 3 FPP per hand) in ring games and 7 FPPs are accumulated per $1 paid in tournament fees. When playing in tournaments and real-money games, FPP’s are accrued and fill in the “Gold Chip Meter.” Once the Gold Chip Meter is filled, a gold chip is awarded and may be used to:

• Purchase a variety of cool gear from the Cake Shop Rewards Store including: electronics, clothing, books and various other prizes.
• Entry into real-money tournaments.

Gold cards are gathered in real-money games once a certain amount of rake is accrued. Once earned, the Gold Card is displayed at the end of the hand in which it was earned and the card and its suit is randomly selected. If the Gold Card matches either one of your hole cards then you may select one of four ways to cash it in: weekly races, daily lottery, guaranteed cash prizes and the chance to win a grand prize.

Aside from Gold Chips and gold Cards, Cake Poker offers a variety of different promotions including:

• 2010 Irish Open- Play for your chance to win a $7,500 prize package to the 2010 Irish Open.
• Freeroll Into Millions- Parlay your freeroll wins into thousands of dollars in Cake Poker’s biggest guarantees.

Support
Customer support at Cake Poker is poor and relegated to email and a very rudimentary FAQ section. That being said, their email support is relatively fast and thorough.
