Bodog Poker Review
Bodog Poker was launched in 2004 and is the poker arm of Bodog Entertainment, a media and digital entertainment company that offers a variety of different gaming services including an online casino and a bookmaking service for sports and horse racing, in addition to an international record label and television production division. As with other poker rooms that have associations with online casinos and sports betting operations, a portion of the traffic at Bodog Poker derives from their other gambling services and provides for many beginning players with very loose play.

Traffic at Bodog Poker is relatively light with approximately 5,000 players online at peak hours. Surprisingly, they host a relatively large selection of different poker games. The software at Bodog Poker is excellent, offering nice graphics and great functionality. One of their more innovative functions is their three in one mode which allows the player to view three tables in the same window.

If taking on pros is your thing, Team Bodog’s two sponsored (and coincidentally attractive) pros, Evelyn Ng and Tatjana Pasalic, regularly host their own tables and will be more than happy to accommodate you.

Bodog Poker attracts a great deal of players from their online casino and online sportsbook. This means that you are likely to find a great deal of fish "swimming" about in the poker room. This is great news for experienced players and there is plenty of money to be won. Be careful though, this poker room does have its share of sharks and the introduction of their new North American brand, Bovada Poker, means that you will find plenty of Americans stalking the waters.

The Action
The majority of the traffic at Bodog Poker is concentrated at the lower limits where the action is very loose with viewed-flop percentages topping off at close to 60%. The action is quite juicy with lots of beginners and wild casino gamblers up to the $5/$10 limit tables. Beyond that, the competition begins to stiffen up.

Bodog Poker hosts a reasonably large variety of Texas Hold’em tables with tables offered from 2 to 10 players with limits ranging from $0.05/$0.10 up to $30/$60. Most of the action revolves around the No Limit tables but there is plenty of action to be found in all limits. The Omaha tables are available for either 9 or 10 players with the majority of the action gravitating towards the $2/$4 Pot Limit tables. The stud tables at Bodog Poker are strictly Fixed Limit 8 player tables with limits ranging from $0.25/$0.50 up to $5/$10 and action in the lower limits at all times.

Bodog Poker offers the following poker games:

• Texas Hold’em
• Omaha
• Omaha Hi/Lo
• 7 Card Stud
• 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo
• 5 Card Stud

Should you want a little break in the action, you can always hit the Bodog casino and play a couple of games or make a bet from their sports book service.

The selection of tournaments on offer at Bodog Poker is excellent. They have a large selection of multi-table tournaments especially at peak hours. The tournaments at Bodog Poker are well trafficked, fast and well structured. As with their ring tables, the action in the low buy-in tournaments is wild and wily, stiffening up as the buy-ins go up.

The best known of Bodog Poker’s tournaments is their $150 + $12 buy-in $100,000 guaranteed tournament. Bodog Poker offers a variety of other regularly running tournaments with buy-ins ranging from $1 all the way up to several hundred dollars and includes satellites, guaranteed, re-buys, non re-buys and turbo tournaments in addition to the occasional special event. The daily tournaments offered on Bodog Poker, together, combine to create a monthly guaranteed prize pool of close to $2 million. One tournament exclusive to Bodog Poker is their “beginner tournament” which has a $4 buy-in and pays out to twice as many players as Bodog Poker’s conventional tournaments; giving beginners an excellent introduction to real money tournament play.

Bodog Poker runs $1,500 guaranteed daily freerolls which are very popular as well as freerolls and qualifiers to many of the big live events such as the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour.

For The Beginner
Bodog Poker is a good place for the beginner to get started. Bodog Poker offers neither an online poker academy nor a library of instructional videos and podcasts but they do have a fairly rich collection of poker related literature. Their library ranges from poker rules governing each of the games offered on their site to a variety of different articles covering strategy and poker theory.

Bodog Poker offers a large variety of different play money games easily found in their lobby window as they are highlighted in blue. Their guaranteed freerolls and satellites are also quite excellent as they offer the beginner the opportunity to play for cash and prizes without having to post any money. One truly exceptional feature to Bodog Poker, as concerns the beginner, is their “beginner” tournaments. Their “beginner” tournaments offer the novice player an excellent transition from the world of play money games and freeroll tournaments to the world of real money ring games and tournaments.

The action in the lower limit games at Bodog Poker is fairly loose and the level of play is quite low. This offers the beginner an excellent atmosphere in which to learn; however, things change as the limits rise and the beginner must keep this in mind as they progress.

Software Graphics and Features
Bodog Poker’s designers and programmers utilized Micropower source code as the foundation of their service and invested a great many hours in design to construct a poker room tailoring to the standards of Bodog Entertainment. Generally, late entry into an industry would work to a companies disadvantage; however, Bodog Poker used it to their advantage looking at the successes and failures of the various existing services and creating a poker room that sets the standard for application features and stability.

Bodog Poker’s lobby window displays such information as average pot size and players per flop and is easy to navigate and highly filterable. For those players who can’t be bothered taking the time to search through the lobby for an appropriate game, Bodog Poker offers the “quickseat” feature that allows players to immediately find a seat at a table with their desired game and at the appropriate level.

Bodog Poker took a minimalist approach to designing their tables; no 3D avatars, no chairs, no tables and no fancy schmancey background designs… just poker. That having been said, the software is very user-friendly and chock full of cool features. They have placed a “raise to” button in the control panel that will place a bet matching the amount shown next to the bet slider. This amount changes periodically in accordance with the actions of the other players. Bodog Poker permits only 3 table multi-table play which may very well be the lowest in the industry. This could be a problem for those of you that have invested money in large monitors to accommodate large numbers of simultaneous multi-table play. If three tables provide enough of a platform for you to enjoy poker then you will be happy to find that Bodog has developed a very innovative multi-table view with four tables appearing in the same window; the focus table appears larger than the other three which appear one on top of the other on the left hand side of the window. The effect is somewhat like a main view and two pictures in picture (PIP).

All said and done, Bodog Poker provides a superior product for those looking for bare bones no nonsense online poker.

Bodog Poker has an excellent sign-up bonus for new players meeting their initial deposit with a 100% sign-up bonus up to $1000 with 10% of the initial deposit being awarded immediately as a cash bonus. The rest of the sign-up bonus is earned as a function of Bodog Poker Points (PTS) accrued with $1 of bonus money earned for every 10 PTS accrued. Players are given only 30 days to earn their sign-up bonus and will receive their bonus up to 48 hours thereafter.

Bodog Poker’s loyalty program is about as simple and straightforward as its interface is Spartan. For every $1 spent in tournament fees spent, players are awarded 3 PTS. Concerning ring games, PTS is earned in accordance with a scale where 0.10 PTS is earned when $0.04-$0.25 is paid in rake and 1 PTS is earned when $1-$3 is paid in rake. If you manage to accumulate 2000 or more PTS in one month then Bodog Poker doubles your monthly PTS total.

PTS can be exchanged for:

• Cash
• Entry into exclusive PTS tournaments

In addition to PTS awards, Bodog Poker offers a whole host of promotions including:

• 100% Match Reload Bonus- Deposit up to $500 and Bodog Poker will match it with a 100% reload bonus. Reload bonuses are earned as a function of PTS accrued over a 30 day period.

• Tournament Leader Board- Top Bodog’s Tournament Leader Board and earn a variety of prizes including the opportunity to play David Williams heads-up for $1,000.

There is no way to describe Bodog Poker’s customer service other than “superior.” Bodog Poker offers their players 24/7 toll free telephone support, live chat support and email support. In addition, Bodog has a very thorough system of FAQs. Access to all of these avenues of support is unusual in poker sites and particularly unexpected in a poker site of this size which is why we have characterized their customer service as superior.
