How to Play Pineapple Poker
Saturday, 17. December 2011

Pineapple poker is a poker variation that is similar in many ways to Texas Hold-em poker. In pineapple poker, though, players are dealt three cards face down, rather than two, before the first round of betting. After the first betting round but before the community cards are dealt, one of these cards must be discarded. During a game of pineapple, each player can bet a maximum of four times. The final bet will only allow players to call or fold - no raising of the bet will be allowed during this fourth bet. However, in Pot Limit and No Limit Pineapple, the fourth bet has no cap and players are allowed to raise the bet if they choose.

To play pineapple poker, each player antes up. Then, the dealer deals three cards face down to each player. Each player looks at their three cards and a round of betting takes place. At this point in the game, the dealer deals three cards face up in the center of the table. Each player can use these cards with their hole cards to create a good hand. After the three cards have been dealt face up, another round of betting takes place. At this point in pineapple poker, each player has to discard one of their hole cards so that they are left with two hole cards and three community cards to make a hand. However, in some variations of this game, players have to discard their third card earlier than this point, usually before or after the first round of betting, before the community cards are dealt. At this point in pineapple, another card is dealt face up and more betting takes place. Then, another community card is dealt face up and more betting follows. Each player tries to make the best card hand possible and the game goes to a final showdown. The player with the highest hand wins the pot.

In pineapple poker, the winning hands tend to be quite strong. In fact, the winning hands in pineapple poker tend to be quite a bit better than the winning hands in Texas Hold-Em. Largely, this is because each player has an extra card dealt to them. Although this card is discarded before the game proceeds too far, that extra card has a big impact on the game. Essentially, that card gives each player an extra chance to build a great hand. The extra card means that Pineapple combines some elements of draw poker and stud poker, creating more hand possibilities. At the same time, many betting rounds mean that the pot grows quite quickly in many cases, so that playing with a weak hand can cost you a lot of money. This means that you will want to play hands that begin with strong cards, such as high pairs, right away.
