How to Play Indian Poker
Saturday, 17. December 2011

In this variation of poker, bluffing counts for a great deal. Since this game is simple to learn, it can be a great way for a beginning player to learn how to keep a perfect poker face. This variety of poker is also a very fun variation that is often enjoyed on poker nights across the country. This game is not always in favor, at least in part because its name is not very politically correct. In some places, this game is called Native poker.

To begin playing this poker game, each player antes up. Then, the dealer deals one card face down to each player. Each player then has to slide the card along to the edge of the table without looking at it and has to place the card - again, without looking at it - on their forehead so that everyone but them can see the card. Any player who peeks at their own card is disqualified from the game and has to pay a penalty into the pot. Once everyone’s cards are visible and everyone has had a chance to look at all their fellow player’s cards, betting begins with the player to the left of the dealer. Each player bets and once the round of betting is complete each player lowers their cards to look. The player with the highest card wins.

This variety of poker can make a nice break to the usual poker games on poker nights. It is a fast, easy game to play and one that brings a smile to almost everyone’s face. Serious poker players may find the game silly and may argue that the game does not build true poker skill, but for a fast game that ensures laughs, this style of poker is difficult to beat.

When playing this style of poker, you can easily see how likely you are to have the highest hand. If everyone has low to medium hands and is not eager to bet, then chances are you have a high card on your forehead even if you cannot see it. You should bet. On the other hand, if another player has an Ace, then you are likely to lose. You will want to fold. The fast one-round betting at least ensures that the pot never gets too expensive.

Since it is a very casual game, this style of poker can be a great way to notice tells. Since the stakes are often low and the game is fast, players are sometimes more likely to react in this game than in other styles of poker. As other players look at card on your head, you may want to note their reactions closely. You may see crucial “tells” or clues that will let you see how players react to high or low cards in the future. The game can also be a good way to practice your own poker face for your next game.
